Crisis as contrasted with ordinary management; overview of the main lessons learned since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and four illustrative crisis situations since then; in parallel, a focus on traditional UN peacekeeping efforts since the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) of 1956; the difficulties of forging rational objectives in the context of moving rationally towards compromise and resolution; the practical use of psychology and game theory in evaluating how best to address the emotional issues related to crisis; the process of determining what a feasible End State could be, and assessing realistically the steps to reach that objective. It is a 2-day hands-on opportunity to improve our skills and knowledge in this critical area; intended for students interested in international relations; diplomats and NGO members; military and civil emergency staff.
